![]() Now, decades later, it is clear that it was all about nothing. ![]() Last week I was vividly reminded of Hopper’s dark rhetoric when I saw the compelling new film titled “Trumbo,’ in which she is portrayed in all her bristling nastiness by Helen Mirren.ĭirected by Jay Roach, “Trumbo” superbly re-creates the political paranoia that gave rise to the congressional witch hunts, a dark era that ruined the lives of scores of artists, and revealed the hypocrisy of Hollywood’s studio hierarchy. I met Hopper in the 1960s, when she scolded me for writing admiringly about Dalton Trumbo, the blacklisted screenwriter. Among her victims were Charlie Chaplin, Dalton Trumbo and numerous writers and artists caught up in the notorious blacklist era. ![]() Hedda was a journalist (of sorts), who famously wore exotic hats and devoted herself to destroying the careers of anyone she identified as being communist, gay or otherwise reprehensible. I soon moved on to younger writers, some of whom had never heard of the blacklist, but who understood that the movies of the ’60s were searching for a new sensibility. The best news about Hedda Hopper is that few remember her. Even though they hated the studio system, they still instinctively wrote studio movies - old-fashioned studio movies. I admired their talent, not their politics, and proceeded to hire a few of them. Further, when the conversation merged into politics - and these were very political people - the dialogue quickly became antagonistic. Even though I was a youthful newcomer to the studio structure, and was dispensing work, I represented a symbol of the hierarchy and, as such, was someone to distrust. These were men who loved writing and loved movies, but who had grown to hate the system. Meeting with blacklisted writers was a challenge, however. I decided to be both opportunistic and idealistic here was a pool of talented writers available at reasonable rates. ![]() Mayer, who coined the expression “Hedda Hell.” Blacklist supporters like John Wayne and James Arness even co-starred in a film titled “Big Jim McLain,” playing investigators tracking down communist sympathizers.īy the mid-1960s when I left the New York Times to join Paramount, blacklisted writers were still struggling to get studio assignments, even though credit was no longer an issue. In the film, Mirren as Hopper threatens to ruin the careers of stars like Edward G. The decision to credit Trumbo spurred threats of boycotts and demonstrations from self-styled patriotic groups, and Hopper kept hammering at the studios in her columns and on radio and TV. It was not until 1960, thanks to the advocacy of Otto Preminger, Kirk Douglas and producer Edward Lewis, that he was aptly credited on “Spartacus” and “Exodus.” After serving jail time, he spent years grinding out B-picture scripts and, later, writing studio films under fake names. In the film, Trumbo (played by Bryan Cranston) comes across as a brilliant but obstinate figure who led fellow writers in defying the witch hunters. There were a few avowed communists around, there were even communist cells, but at no time did an effective conspiracy take shape to contaminate Hollywood films with communist ideology. ![]() There are many good books out there that prove that people with a chronic mental illness can lead a productive life. People can also take the time to read stories and books written by writers who have schizophrenia or another severe mental illness. For example, those of us with schizophrenia are more likely to be a victim of a crime than a perpetrator of a crime. People can make a difference by educating themselves on the symptoms, statistics, and facts of illnesses like schizophrenia. There have been series like Awake, River, The OA, and others that have dealt with alternate realities without pathologizing their characters, and I think that is progress for the mental health community as a whole. I have seen some improvement in the last year on subscription services like Netflix and their offerings. There are ways to overcome the stigma and negative stereotypes about schizophrenia, and my belief is that art and education are the starting points. But no one guessed that schizophrenia was the cause of my comments - or, at times, what some would call strange or unusual behavior. I won’t say that keeping my illness a secret didn’t lead to confusion and many misunderstandings - it did. ![]() I don’t know what my neighbors or the people who came into contact with me during that time thought, but generally speaking, I kept my illness a secret from most of my friends and my husband’s family for close to twenty years. ![]() "Everyone can have a role in breaking down stigma and loosening the power of stereotypes." I paid special attention to the mailperson, giving him up to half a cake a day because I knew he was fighting cancer. During that time I made up to three cakes a day and gave them out to my neighbors, mailperson, delivery drivers, etc., all in an effort, I believed, to heal them from their ailments. I have also thought that I was a healer receiving instructions from God on how to bake and cook. I once spent six months carrying on a conversation with the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God (not all of that was unpleasant, and some of it was life changing). So, what does a psychotic episode look like for me and many others? One thing that is common among people with schizophrenia is religiosity: I have thought I was the second coming of Christ in person on two occasions. For one thing, I have never been a danger to anyone but myself, and like I said before, I am married and female. But I still don’t look or act like the people seen in movies. There are less frequent times when I am psychotic and experiencing the more stereotypical things people associate with schizophrenia, such as hearing voices, being delusional, making bizarre connections from various sources of information, etc. On an average day, the symptoms of schizophrenia that I have to deal with are paranoia, lack of motivation, anxiety (which may or may not be separate from my diagnosis of schizophrenia), and side effects from medication like foggy-headedness and exhaustion. I don’t look at all like the portrayals of these killers Hollywood never seems to tire of writing into movies and series. Meanwhile, I am in my brightly lit living room, watching a big screen television, curled up next to my husband of twenty years - and I am a woman. ![]() In every episode I have seen, these characters are single males, usually living alone and frequently in a dark apartment or basement. Most popular detective shows have featured at least one episode where the killer has schizophrenia. Stigma and stereotypes are alive and well in the minds of many Americans. Don’t confuse this with motor power or torque though, that’s a whole different ball game altogether (we will get to that shortly.) Regardless if you opt for an Artisan Mini or a powerful commercial mixer, they will all run at the same 10-speed settings. There are exceptions to this rule, like the ice cream maker or precise heat bowl, which come in bowl-lift/tilt-head variations.Īnother big similarity to bear in mind is that all KitchenAid mixers have the same speed settings. In fact, every KitchenAid stand mixer since 1919 has come with this universal port. This allows you to attach all those extra accessories to your mixer and transform it into a pasta maker, grinder or juicer.īecause of this, most accessories will work with any KitchenAid mixer. The first thing to remember is that all mixers come with a multipurpose hub. Stand Mixer Similarities Every mixer has a multi-purpose hub!Īlthough there are plenty of factors that set these machines apart from one another, there are a few things they have in common too. ![]() That’s before you have even started to think about the different colors or accessories available. That’s a lot of mixers! Choosing between these models is a pretty daunting task in itself. In the USA, there are now 13 different types of KitchenAid stand mixer models you can choose from. Although the range is pretty similar, for some reason, the KitchenAid models vary slightly between the US, Canada, and the UK. These mixers are a pretty pricey investment, so it’s understandable that you want to make sure you are getting the right one, especially if you are new to baking and are still learning the tricks of the trade.ĭepending on which country you are based in, your selection of stand mixers will vary. KitchenAid doesn’t exactly make it easy for us to decipher their vast selection of stand mixers. You start to look up one model, then another, and the next, and soon you’re lost in a sea of serial numbers and can’t tell a bowl-lift from a tilt-head anymore.ĭon’t panic, you certainly aren’t the only one that feels a little lost with this choice. Gaze, 86, of Albion, New York passed away peacefully in Florida on April 6, 2023. Some, especially in developed areas, are used as truck gardens, with their own produce stands, or a regular stall in a local farmer's market.Albion- John “Jack” C. These are usually snapped up quickly by people with well-paying city jobs who wish to live in the country, or retirees, who wish to be active as part-time farmers. These can be sold off with only a building lot of real estate, but are much more saleable if a modest area, 5 to 15 acres (20,000 to 60,000 m²) is sold along with them. Some are purchased and most of the land is combined with larger nearby farms, however, the large farm has little use for the buildings. In the US, as farms grow in size, older farms become less economically viable. Over 50% of primary farm operators reported that their main income was a job outside of their farm although, this figure includes some farm operators who do not personally participate in farming and some quite large and productive farms. In 2007, over 40% of farms reported less than $2500 in income and over 10% of farms had less than 10 acres (4.0 hectares) of land. In the U.S., a high proportion of farms might be classed as hobby farms. The nouveau farmer is, above all, enjoying himself.”Īn old dairy farm has become a hobby farm near Leicester, New York “There is a blurred line between the smallholder/crofter and the hobby farmer, although my own definition would be ‘a smallholder tries to make money on his land, a hobby farmer spends money on his land.’ Mainly, it’s a matter of attitude. The main planks on which a definition can be made are money and labour: the hobby farmer’s income is largely made from off-farm work and the holding does not employ full-time labour. Willy Newlands, author of Hobby Farm (Souvenir Press, London, 2006), says: “Hobby agriculture covers a wide spectrum, from backyard eggs-and-jam to large areas of grazing land. An acre of land will support a couple of milking goats or some pigs, and once the hobby farmer is operating on a hectare (about 2.5 acres) he/she can think of poultry free-ranging in an orchard or a mini-flock of sheep.ĭoubling the area makes it possible to keep a cow and calf, and increasing it again to 10 acres (4 hectares) finds space for some cropping in support of the livestock (hay and forage crops) and a worthwhile mixed orchard with apples, plums and other fruit.Įven though each type of pleasure farm may be clearly seen by its owner as a non-profit enterprise, lifestyle farmers claim great satisfaction in making the land productive enough to cover the cost of feeding the livestock and giving some high-quality additions to the household menu, from fruit and vegetables to meat and eggs. This was said to be "consistent with the new trend of buying houses in the country with 20-60 acres of land - more than a garden, not quite a fully-fledged farm." Ī house with a large garden can be a mini-hobby farm, with vegetables, poultry, rabbits and a few hives of bees. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says that nearly half of all farms sold in a recent year were bought by non-farmers. The number of farms in England with "no economic output" in recent surveys jumped in one year from 90,000 to 115,000, while the number of large farms fell to only 15,000. In the UK, country living is becoming a pastime rather than an occupation. shopping centres, public transport) and are prepared to travel further to access such amenities. Occupiers of rural residential properties generally accept that there will be a lower level of amenities available to them locally (e.g. Farming may occur on the blocks but is usually conducted on a small scale, more as a hobby than for serious commercial gain. gardening, horses, collecting and restoring old vehicles) which require more land than a normal suburban block or simply prefer the privacy of very-low-density living. Often subdivisions of former farms, these blocks of land are primarily used for residential purposes by those people who enjoy the countryside or have hobbies and interests (e.g. Rural residential living in Australia consists of very large home sites usually on the outskirts of an urban area. Others are managed as working farms for secondary income, or are even run at an ongoing loss as a lifestyle choice by people with the means to do so, functioning more like a country home than a business. Some are held merely to provide recreational land for horses or other use. A hobby farm (also called a lifestyle block in New Zealand, or acreage living or rural residential in Australia) is a smallholding or small farm that is maintained without expectation of being a primary source of income. ![]() In 1850, the first verifiable written record of the Brittany surfaced with the writing of Reverend Davies, who described hunting with a small bobtailed dogs not as smooth coated as the Pointer, that worked well in the brush, who pointed, retrieved well, and that were particularly popular with poachers (the profession requiring easily handled dogs). Legend has it that the first tailless ancestor of the modern Brittany was bred about the mid-1800's at Pontou, a small town in Brittany province. The dogs pictured in these renderings are similar to the dogs that developed along the Atlantic coast into the Wachtelhund, a modern breed much like the Brittany in appearance and ability. The first accurate records to pinpoint the actual Brittany-type dog are the paintings and tapestries of the 17th century, in which the Brittany appears fairly frequently, such as those of Oudry and Steen. Good evidence for this supposition lies in the inherent resemblance existing between the Brittany and the Welsh Springer Spaniel. However, it seems likely the dogs of Brittany and Wales had the same progenitors and developed along similar paths, quite possibly interbreeding since the lands are close and conducted much commerce. While it is generally concluded that the basic stock for all bird dogs is the same, most of the actual facts concerning the development and spread of various breeds is lost to us, and early written records are unclear and confusing. The Brittany was named for the French province in which it originated as early as AD 150. ![]() No matter what size dog you’re looking for, you’ll be sure to get big love from them!
